Trask Family

The Trask river was named after Elbridge Trask and his land title certificate was no. 3926. Elbridge was a native of Massachusetts and came to Oregon the first time in Wyeth's brig May Dacre in 1834. In the fall of 1835 he left for the Rocky Mountains to trap animals. Trask returned to Oregon in 1842 and settled on Clatsop Plains in 1843. He moved from there to Tillamook County in August 1852 and died June 22, 1863 at the age of 49. A post office was opened and named Trask on April 25, 1872 and operated intermittently, and not always in the same location, until October of 1906.

In 1852 Mr. and Mrs. Elbridge Trask settled on a Donation Land Claim on Hoquarton prairie with a family of eight. A house and other buildings were erected near the river and the Trask River was named in honor of the family.
